Set on Tuxertal's towering sunny plateau, the Austrian village of Tux encompasses five resorts in the Zillertal Valley. Cue plenty of varied terrain and mile-munching galore!
From Tux-Vorderlanersbach, Tux-Lanersbach, and Juns, intermediates are treated to a wide variety of blues and reds that also link into the wider Finkenberg and Mayrhofen pistes. Further up the valley, steep, challenging red runs snake down from the sky-high Hintertux Glacier to Madseit and Hintertux. And the best bit? Glacier skiing is open 365 days a year! Let’s go!
With snow guaranteed on the lofty Hintertux Glacier from October right through to May, there’s plenty of time to squeeze in a ski trip to Tux.
A popular training ground amongst the pros, this all-year-round resort is perfect for a short break at the start or end of the season to get the legs warmed up before the main season gets going. The attraction of glacier skiing means the slopes can get busy during peak weeks, so travel outside of the school holidays if you can.
Things to do in Tux
With pristine cross-country tracks, floodlit toboggan runs and an open-air ice rink, there’s plenty of fun to be had off the slopes in Tux. Venture into the Hintertux Glacier ice caves to discover a natural underground ice palace. Giant stalactites hang from icy cavern ceilings, and frozen waterfalls ripple into the glacial turquoise water.
Feeling chilly? Warm up in natural thermal waters at a spa in Hintertux village. Then head into town for some top-notch grub. Restaurants here use local produce to serve traditional Austrian dishes, including Käsespätzle (a delicious take on mac and cheese) and Kaspressknödel (cheesy dumplings). Delish!
