Bormio is a medieval town famed for its thermal waters in a corner of the Italian mountains where few British tend to ski.
For those who love to explore the unfamiliar, it’s a great spot, situated at the base of the legendary Stelvio Pass with high-altitude skiing up to 3,000m. The Stelvio is also the name of its most famous piste, which will host the men's downhill in the 2026 Winter Olympics.
For more chilled skiers, the resort’s 110km of slopes are a winter playground offering mostly blue and red runs, ideal for families and first timers, but there’s also plenty of off-piste for freeride fans.
The ski season runs for over four months, kicking off in the beginning of December and closing mid April. With its slopes lying between 1,600m and 3,000m, Bormio’s got the altitude to ensure it’s as snow sure as you’ll find in the Alps.
December and January offer festive spirits. February is high-season. Then March onwards is the time to come if your idea of a ski holiday is not complete without afternoons spent lying on a sun-lounger, soaking up some of that Italian sun with a cocktail or cappuccino.
Things to do in Bormio
Known as the ‘wellness mountain’, Bormio is renowned for its natural thermal waters which have been soothing the aching muscles of Italians since they were discovered by the Romans. Apparently, even Leonardo Da Vinci came here to bathe. Today nine natural springs supply three spas in town, including the Romans’ original spring, which is still in use.
Elsewhere there is much cultural interest, from museums to medieval architecture to ancient forts and military installations that date to the First World War. Other sports on offer include cross-country skiing, paragliding, snowshoeing, and ice skating. Being Italy, the cuisine is excellent and there are ten restaurants on the mountain, as well as dozens of options in town. There are also bars aplenty, but don’t expect the hedonistic scenes of more famous party resorts.
