Cortina is one of Italy’s most renowned resorts. It hosted the country’s first Olympic games in 1956, was the location for a Bond film in the 80s, and for a while, it was the place for stars and celebs to be seen.
Cortina's star is very much on the rise again as it prepares to host the 2026 Olympics. Its chief attraction is the jaw-dropping beauty of the place. Cortina is situated in the heart of the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and surrounded by towering rock spires. An ‘Alpine Dolce Vita’ they call it.
You’ll love its 83 uncrowded pistes (mostly easy to intermediate), the great food, and the relaxed, chic Italian vibes.
The ski season runs from the beginning of December to the end of April. Christmas and the New Year period up until January 6th always provides a festive (if sometimes busy) backdrop to a trip. The resort then starts to get quieter mid January onwards before the second peak season of February hits. This can be a great time to plan your trip.
Italians also celebrate Carnival which is usually at the end of February, and everyone loves to dress up. March and April also make for pleasant skiing, when the days become longer and the sun starts to work its magic.
Things to do in Cortina d'Ampezzo
Besides the designer shopping, the glamour and its picture-postcard views, Cortina is also famous as the site of several first world war battles. Even to this day, old ammunition and remains are sometimes found. So when you learn there is an 80km battlefield ski tour along the old front line in the mountains – all lift-accessed - it suddenly makes sense.
As far as après goes, the scene is a bit more chilled and refined than more raucous resorts – don’t expect to come off the slopes into a bar with thumping music. But as far as eating goes, you’re spoilt for choice, with over 60 restaurants and cafes to choose from.
