Sauze d’Oulx is part of Italy’s Via Lattea ski area, better known as the Milky Way. Think hundreds of kilometres of milky smooth pistes, from high alpine runs with panoramic views in every direction, to forested descents leading to sun-kissed terraces, mountain restaurants (there are over 30) and lower down, some great bars and nightlife. This is a resort that’s ideal for intermediate skiers looking to explore. The modern lift system connects with Sestriere and the French resort of Montgenevre – it’s possible to ski there and back in a day. Each resort also has its own terrain park, so there’s plenty to keep boarders happy too.
With slopes up to 2,800m, Sauze d’Oulx is a snow-sure resort with artificial snow machines on 60% of slopes. This means that it’s a safe bet throughout the whole season, which runs from early December through to mid April. Going for Christmas and New Year adds a festive element – especially in this party town. February is also a popular month. March and April offer great spring skiing and the chance to sit on the terraces in the sun or explore some of the other activities on offer.
Things to do in Sauze d'Oulx
Sauze d’Oulx used to have a real party town reputation and its nightlife was one of the reasons for its appeal. These days some of its excesses have been curbed, but it’s still a great place for a night out with several bars and clubs. For non-skiers there’s winter walking and cross-country skiing in Sestriere, shopping in town and spas to relax after a hard day on the slopes. It’s also possible to organise a day trip to Briançon in France, or Turin is only an hour away on the train.
