5 of the best ski resorts in Andorra for beginners
We know booking your first ski holiday can seem daunting. You want to pick the perfect resort: Easy, gentle slopes, ski schools for lessons, and plenty of fun with friends and family. Andorra has all the ingredients for an incredible holiday on the slopes, with great value resorts and fantastic skiing at a fraction of the cost of the Alps. But the low price tag isn't the only thing Andorra has going for it...
With high altitudes ensuring incredible snow from December through to April, beginner skiing in abundance, and the picturesque snow-capped peaks of the Pyrenees, Andorra is skiing with the volume turned to blast. (And that’s without us even mentioning the legendary après scene.)
Here are five of the best ski resorts for beginners in Andorra we recommend for those just getting started:
1. Arinsal
Arinsal offers some of the best value skiing and snowboarding anywhere in Europe. With fantastic snow, bluebird days, and jaw-dropping mountain views, it's no wonder people keep returning here season after season!
The Pal Arinsal ski area is the perfect pick for couples and small groups seeking relaxed vibes and mellow pistes. Situated at 1500m, with runs up to 2600m, Arinsal brings the big mountain snow in flurries. Small and compact, everything you need at your fingertips here, with plenty of wide, gentle tree-lined runs, a brilliant nursery area, and excellent ski schools. There's even a radical 'freestyle' area for snowboarders looking to practise their first tricks.
Back at the resort, rally the troops to soak tired muscles at the Princesa Parc Mountain Spa with jacuzzi, saunas, and super-zen hydrotherapy sessions. Later, fill hungry tums with Andorran specialities before finishing the day toasting frosty beers in the idyllic local bars, ready to do it all again tomorrow.
When to go: We recommend March for end-of-season après and the best spring skiing on the mountain. We're talking longer days, warmer temps, and incredible value for money.
2. Pas de la Casa
Ski hard and party harder. With one of the liveliest après scenes in Europe, Pas de la Casa (or 'Pas') is THE destination for groups looking to sample the slopes as much as the apres-ski.
Pas de la Casa is home to the legendary 215km Grandvalira ski area, the largest in Andorra. Start your day catching the Els Pioners gondola to the snow garden for your very first ski lesson, then head to the Piso beginner's area at Funicamp mid-station to cruise gentle greens and heaps of wide cruisy blues. The 2080m elevation means bright bluebird days and pristine snow are nearly always on the cards - ideal for those seeking snow-sure, budget-friendly trips sans the crowds.
Done cruising the pistes? Hit the town to explore heaps of duty-free shopping at one of Andorra's top retail destinations, or get the adrenaline pumping with snow tubing and snowmobiles. As the evening rolls in, the party begins, with epic live music and legendary DJ sets echoing through the valley til the early hours.
When to go: Book in February for fluffy pistes or March for Paddy's Day celebrations and high-altitude powder.
3. La Massana
La Massana is the perfect first ski holiday for groups of beginners and young families. Quiet and scenic, with easy access to the pistes, begin your first day by grabbing the seven-minute ski lift to Pal and Arsinal's beginner sections to help warm up your ski legs. At over 2500m, it's as snow-sure as it gets, with incredible mountain-top views of the Pyrenees. Once you feel more confident, cap off your first week gliding down wide, gentle blues amidst snow-capped trees below the Pic del Cubil peak—magical!
Ideal for those wanting the winter wonderland experience, come here to zig-zag through alpine forests with huskies, explore jaw-dropping vistas on snowshoes, or slow it down by exploring the traditional Old Town and Baroque Church of Sant Iscle and Santa Victoria on a walking tour. After all that - it's time to kick back and catch your breath with frothy beers on sun terraces or hit the town for some great value tax-free shopping.
When to go: Book in December for early bird deals and festive fun. Stroll Christmas markets, be dazzled by twinkling fairy lights, and sip steaming mugs of mulled wine - ¡Salud!
4. Soldeu
Described as a picturesque paradise, Soldeu is a great pick for mixed-ability groups and young families. Come here for varied slopes, a friendly atmosphere, and excellent close-to-slope amenities - including plenty of ski-in/ski-out accommodation.
The vast Grandvalira ski area is a hotspot for newbies. Altitudes of over 2600m mean snow-coated north-facing slopes from December through to April (with snow cannons able to top up where necessary.) Start your trip learning the ropes at the beginner zone with a lesson at an excellent English-speaking ski school. Once you're feeling more confident, take to the wide tree-lined green and blues of Astoret to ski straight from the mountain back to your hotel door (or to après bar!).
When to go: For groups looking to save some extra après money, we recommend March and April for last-minute deals, uncrowded slopes, and long, warm bluebird days.
5. El Tarter
Soldeu's quieter neighbour, El Tarter offers a chilled-out sanctum away from the hustle and bustle. Located at the heart of Andorra's biggest and best ski area - this resort has everything you need to get shredding in style.
Thinking of booking beginner skiing lessons? Why not learn at one of Europe's best English-speaking ski schools? El Tarter's instructors are nothing short of top-class, with all the expertise to help give you the confidence to make your first taste of the slopes as legendary as you've envisioned. Once schools are out, take the main resort lift to the large dedicated beginner's plateau to practise your snow plough before venturing on your first blue run back down to the après bar to celebrate.
Though small, El Tarter still knows how to bring the party with lively après, cocktail bars, and plenty of live music. Cheers to that!
When to go: With snow in the mountains from December to April, El Tarter is a fab choice for Christmas and Half-Term mini-breaks without the crowds.
