Top 5 cheap ski weekends

Perfect for those on a tight budget, ski weekends offer you a quick mountain fix packed into a few short days. Here are Heidi’s top tips on where to head for the best short weekend ski breaks to maximise time and money.

Borovets, Bulgaria

Cheap and oh-so-cheerful, Borovets is often thought of as the place for students and après party people. But it’s also so much more than that. Easily accessible for short weekend ski trips, beginners and intermediates can enjoy plenty of cruisy piste through ancient pine forests, while boarders hit the terrain park rails, boxes, and kickers. Get the ultimate bang for your buck in March with warmer temps, longer days, and the snowiest weeks of the season. When the skiing’s done, become a part of Bulgaria’s legendary après scene with a round of cheap ice-cold beers at the base of the slopes. Nazdrave!

Les Deux Alpes, France

For authentic French skiing without the hefty price tag, Les Deux Alpes leaves its skiers spoilt for choice. The beating heart of the Ecrins mountains, between the northern and southern Alps; high altitudes = glorious bluebird days at Les Deux Alps. Peaceful piste fans can explore over 200km of cruisy corduroy, freestyle parks, and steep gnarly glacial descents, with crowds at a minimum in January and the late season. When you’re done slopeside, hit the town with over 200 shops, authentic alpine eats of gooey raclettes and steaming fondues, and an epic après scene with live DJ sets that’ll have you raving on the mountain til dawn.

La Massana, Andorra

For whimsical winter charm away from the party scene, La Massana offers a quiet, scenic alternative perfect for families and couples looking for laid-back fun. Set against the majestic backdrop of the Pyrenees, La Massana is packed with cruisy blues, easy reds, and accessible, gentle beginner slopes close to the resort. Early escapes in January offer spectacular bluebird days at low cost, while snow cannons and 2000m high altitudes can help raise a decent spread of white stuff to mid-April. When the skiing’s done, meet up with friends for a chilled day of tax-free shopping and resting weary limbs at the Caldea Thermal Spa. Bliss.

Chamonix, France

A bucket-list destination for many, Chamonix is the ideal short ski break for those wanting to maximise their slope time with extraordinary skiing, short flights, and quick and easy transfer options. Bluebird days are all but guaranteed in the high altitudes of the Alps, with the rugged cliffs and glaciers of Mont Blanc providing the perfect backdrop. Advanced and Intermediate groups will be spoilt for choice with over 10 miles of cruisy blues and wild mountain runs (chief among them, the spectacular 23km Vallée Blanche descent), so planning your routes ahead will prove a must. With skiing at its peak in January and the glorious sunshine sticking around until the end of the season, this is apex skiing without the price tag.

Bansko, Bulgaria

Great for newbies and daredevils, Bansko is ideal for large groups looking for legendary skiing weekend deals on the cheap. The wide, varied pistes can keep skiers and boarders of all experiences entertained. With long, gentle slopes for beginners, the thrilling black runs of Tomba and Balkaniada for the experienced, and - for the truly adventurous - renowned off-piste skiing full of steep chutes and open powder bowls. With a party atmosphere as legendary as its skiing, Bansko's lively bars, cheap drinks, and loud music know how to keep the energy going. Ideal for best men seeking epic stag dos or students wanting the after-party of after parties, Bansko offers the ski hard, party harder après that will keep you raving til dawn.
